Jan. 21 2009

Sorry I missed my post yesterday, so i'm going to make up for it today. Ok, yesterday we couldn't go into Mr. Maks's class because he was having an exam for his grade 12 class I believe, so we went down to the caf. to do what ever work we had to do. We had a choice to either work on an old exam to practice for our exam next Tuesday, or we could work on accelerated math. Remember that we are allowed cheat sheets for the exam so get them do becauase they will help you. I think this is all I have to say for now, write you guys later.

TVM SOLVER book report

The TVM Solver program in the TI 83 is used to calculate compound and normal interest. The way you find this program is by pressing the APPS then (1) finance, enter then (1) TVM Solver and enter again. The Screen that pops up next is as follows:
N= Total number of payment periods
I%= Annual interest rate
PV= Present Value
PMT= Payment amount
FV= Future value
P/Y= Number of payment periods per year
C/Y= Number f compoundings per year
PMT= Press END for ordinary annuity or, BEGIN for an annuity due

NOTE: Money spent will be entered as a negative, and money earned will be entered as a positive.

EXAMPLE # 1

What is the monthly payment for a $25,000 car loan to be paid over 4 years with an 8.5%
interest rate?
1. Enter the TVM Solver.
Press [2nd] [Finance] on the TI-83 or [APPS] and select 1:Finance on the TI-83 Plus.
2. Enter the known values. Your screen should appear as follows.
3. Solve for the unknown value.
Place the cursor at PMT and press [2nd] [Solve] (above the ENTER key). See the
second figure above.
***Note the square that appears by PMT. It means this value has been computed,
not entered.***

EXAMPLE #2
Find the future value of $10,000 invested at 10% interest over 25 years, with an
additional $2,000 added at the end of each year.
1. Enter the TVM Solver.
Press [2nd] [Finance] on the TI-83 or [APPS] and select 1:Finance on the TI-83 Plus.
2. Enter the known values. Your screen should appear as follows.
3. Solve for the unknown value.
Place the cursor at FV and press [2nd] [Solve]. See the second figure above.

Oct. 24/08, Friday

Today the class was started off with some mental math. After and kind of during correcting we started talking about visualization. Mr. Maks. told us about a professor he had that wanted him to visualize a football spinning on it's axis and then visualize an ant starting from the top and have it walk to the equator of the ball in a counter clockwise direction. Mr. Maks. said that few people could do that in his class. After that he told/showed us about the golden ratio 1.61803399. I must admit it was kind of interesting, but i missed some of what he was saying cause i was trying to write this post and listen at the same time, and i know realize that i can not multitask. Finally after all of this excitement we started working on our A/M. For anybody who forgot 26 objectives are due for the end of today. GOOD LUCK!

Oct. 1/08 system word problems

Today we got our test back from Mr. Maks. Personally I think I did not to bad, but I could have done better. Mr. Maks. said that our class average was 59% which he said was a descent class average. After we all got our tests back, we moved on to some word problems.

This word problem was not to bad, but I think I got the same answer that Mr. Maks. did a different way. I would share that way with you guys but I forgot my binder at home and it had all my work in it. If anyone would like to see how I answered this question feel free to ask me tomorrow, and hopefuly I remember how I did it.
This question I thought to be a little more confusing but as Mr. Maks went along I started to pick up on it on my own. I'll still probably need some help on it when I get to this question or one like it.
For the rest of the class it was just a work period to catch up on accelerated math.

Sep, 9

This was our first official lesson of the year. Most of it was review for everyone who has taken grade 10 applied already, but i haven't so it was all new except for a couple things I saw were the same as in my last years class. I thought that the lesson was helpful and it gave me a bit of an idea of what the year is going to be like.
The recall stuff I recognised so that was good, but once we got to the uglier stuff I had no idea what to do, so it was a good thing that we did it as a class.
Yes this was the ugly stuff I was talking about. I did not like this and iI hope we don't have to do any or very many of these types of questions.

Systems were easy to understand. Unless I just misunderstood every thing Mr. Maks said, but I hope that i didn't. So ya I guess thats all I thought about this lesson.
